The Brea Planning Commission on Tuesday approved a plan that would allow the Brea
Downtown Chapel to construct a new sanctuary building that would include Sunday
school classrooms, kitchen facilities, offices and storage rooms.
The expansion, at the chapel's property on Brea Boulevard and Ash Street, will
add 28,500 square feet of building space. The church would also build an outdoor
meditation garden.
Over the years, the chapel has moved several times because of the city's downtown
redevelopment projects. Established in 1950, the chapel - also known as Brea Foursquare
Church - was relocated to the Nazarene Church in 1986, to nearby temporary quarters
in 1989 and to its current location in 1996.
At the time, the church built classrooms, offices, a lunch room, a temporary sanctuary
and apartment units. The permanent sanctuary that was planned has not come to
fruition until now.
The proposed building is located at the southeast corner of the property.
